Backstage, Lev stretched, getting ready for their act, while Irena sat, eating a plate of overcooked noodles and veal. Dmitri suddenly appeared at her side.

“Hello, Dmitri. How are you?”

“I’m good. And you?”

Irena sighed with obvious melancholy. “Oh, I don’t know.”

Dmitri set a can of chocolate sauce, a highly valued item, on the table in front of her. “Perhaps you could be better?”

Irena picked up the can of chocolate sauce and looked at him in disbelief. “For me? But why?”

“Why does there have to be a reason?” he asked in mock seriousness. “I know this is a favorite of Lev’s.”

“But chocolate sauce is very dear. You know this!”

“Oh, all right. Maybe I need just a little favor from you.”

“It must be a big one,” she said, her eyes wide.
